Break Up Your Fallow Ground

“Break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.”  Hosea 10:12

After years of use, a particular field will cease to produce agricultural results.  The usual practice is to allow that field to lay “fallow” or un-used for a number of years.  During the unused years, the field will develop a hard crust that will not accept new seed for productive growth.
After years of the Christian life, we may let parts of our hearts or minds become unproductive and hard.  The prophet Hosea tells us the remedy: break up the fallow ground!
How do we break up the fallow ground?  In Israel they would plow the ground repeatedly and break up all of the “clods,” the large lumps of earth, until the ground is soft and ready to receive new seed.  Only then could the land produce “fruit.”
In our lives, we must find the parts of our heart that are hard, the parts that harbor sin, the parts that ignore the commands of God and the needs of our fellow man, and break them up!  We must seek the Lord, repent of our sin, and ask God to make us capable to produce the fruit of the spirit once more!

Father in Heaven, in the name of Jesus we ask you to reveal our sin and help us break it up until our hearts are completely open to you!  Lord, make us productive once again so that we may love You and our fellow man with all of our heart, mind, body and strength!  In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen!
